Determining the Appropriate Retirement Plan Design

What Flavor Should I Choose?

How tax-saving objectives and employee demographics can determine the appropriate retirement plan design

Steve Diess and Jason Douthit, both retirement plan consultants at Independent Actuaries, Inc., served up information about what to look for and what retirement plan design might “taste” best.

For example:

  • Vanilla – Sole proprietor who wants to put away as much as possible
  • Rocky Road – Business owner with variable income, looking for contribution flexibility
  • Neapolitan – Partnership, with different partners wanting to contribute at different levels
  • Pistachio – Aging business owner looking to sell to the next generation
