401(k) Checklist: The IRS has prepared this checklist for business owners to help them keep their 401(k) retirement plans in compliance with many of the important rules. It is important to review these requirements each year, even though the checklist does not necessarily cover all plan requirements.

Employee Benefit Research Institute: Their mission is to contribute to, to encourage, and to enhance the development of sound employee benefit programs and sound public policy through objective research and education.

The ERISA Industry Committee: A Washington DC non-profit trade association advocating the employee benefit and compensation interests of America’s major employers.

Fiduciary and Plan Sponsor Responsibilities (DOL): Provides employers and plan officials with an understanding of the law and their responsibilities and will focus on steps for avoiding the most common problems EBSA encounters in its enforcement activities.

Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC): The federal corporation that is responsible for protecting the retirement incomes of more than 44 million American workers in more than 29,000 private-sector defined benefit pension plans.

Government Links

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS): The principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics. Statistical data they produce is relevant to the social and economic conditions of the U.S. and its workers.

Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA – DOL): By providing direct assistance to the public, EBSA educates plan participants and beneficiaries, plan sponsors, service providers and other interested parties and ensures they have access to available plan documents filed with the DOL. Individual participants can contact EBSA to receive information that will explain their rights and responsibilities and help them obtain benefits to which they are entitled to.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS): The nation’s tax collection agency and administers the Internal Revenue Code enacted by Congress. Find tax forms (and their instructions) and publications, use the withholding calculator, or apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) online. Social Security Administration (SSA): The official website of the United States Social Security Administration. Access your Social Security earnings statement, estimate your retirement benefits, find forms and publications, and apply for retirement/medical or disability benefits or a Social Security card online.

Congress — Legislative Information on the Internet: Search the Congressional Record and full text of legislation available from 1989 to the present, or summaries of legislation back to 1973.

U.S. Department of Labor (DOL): The official website of the United States Department of Labor. The DOL administers a variety of Federal labor laws ranging from those that guarantee workers’ rights to safe and healthful working conditions to those dealing with employment discrimination, wages and other income support. Subscribe to free email updates from the DOL to receive newly available information about your items of interest directly in your inbox.
